Counselling, psychotherapy – what is the difference?

Essentially they are the same activity and the difference is of degree, rather than kind.

Counselling is more often conducted for a limited number of sessions and while looking at the client’s background, its primary function is to identify and help the client solve immediate problems.
Psychotherapy is a longer-term and usually open-ended commitment, and will look in greater depth at the client’s history and patterns, and the relationship between client and therapist becomes a much more intrinsic part of what enables the therapy to work.   Both provide a regular time and space for people to talk about their troubles and explore difficult feelings, in an environment that is dependable, free from intrusion and confidential.   Sessions usually take place once a week - making this regular commitment gives you a better chance of getting to the heart of your difficulties.

What can counselling/psychotherapy do?

You may come to counselling because of difficult experiences you’ve been going through, such as a relationship breakdown, bereavement or redundancy.   Or you may want help dealing with feelings of sadness, depression, anxiety or low self-worth that don’t seem to be connected to any particular event.   Maybe it will be because you constantly feel under undue stress, or perhaps because you are experiencing dissatisfaction with life, or loss of a sense of direction and purpose.

With Counselling/Psychotherapy you can be helped to address, understand and heal a wide range of life issues, and the (often physical) symptoms arising from these.   Some of the issues you might want to address are:

Reduce Anxiety;  Alleviate Stress;  Deal with Panic Attacks;  Make Life Changes;  Solve Relationship Issues;  Heal Unresolved Childhood Events;  Uplift Low Mood;  Recover from Divorce;  Cope with Bereavement;  Deal with Grief;  Accept Loss;  Heal Trauma;  Gain Emotional Understanding;  Understand how to Manage Anger;  Find Relaxation;  Regain  Enjoyment in Life;  Increase Self Esteem;  Build Confidence;  Reduce Work-Related Stress

Sessions will last for an hour and normally take place weekly.

The counsellor at Being Sound Holistic Health is Jasmine Delmonde.
