Ear Candling (Thermal Auricular Therapy/Hopi Ear Candles) Print E-mail

Thermal Auricular Therapy is a pleasant, non-invasive treatment of the ears, used to treat a variety of conditions.   Ear candles are an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilisations.   They were used as far afield as Asia and the Siberian prairies and it is believed that the Ancient Greeks used ear candles, initially probably for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis, but much later on a purely physical basis.   However, the practice reached the modern world via the native North American Hopi Indians.

Ear Candles are hollow tubes traditionally made from organically grown flax, extracts of honey, beeswax and herbs.   Modern ear candles are still hand made today following the old traditional methods originating from the Hopi Indians.

The candle works by slowly burning down and causing a slight vacuum in the ear, while the natural movement of the flame gently vibrates the air, massaging the eardrum.  The heat from the candle helps stimulate the blood circulation in the and also stimulates reflex zones and energy points.   The vacuum caused by the candle helps draw out was and other impurities while regulating the pressure within the ear.   There is also a small filter within the candle, which prevents any candle wax or residue running into the ear.

Ear Candles are excellent in the treatment of ear, nose and throat conditions or as a relaxation treatment for stress or anxiety related symptoms. They have been found to be helpful with:

Irritation in ears and sinuses
Excessive or compacted ear wax
Pressure regulation in cases of sinusitis, rhinitis, glue ear, colds, flu, headaches and migraine
Relaxing and calming effect in cases of stress
Noises in the ears such as ringing, tinnitus
Catarrh and asthma
Vertigo
Menier's Disease
Neuralgia
Frequent flyers such as air cabin crew and business people – the treatment helps to regulate the pressure in the ear.

During treatment, the client can either turn their head to the side or lie on their side and the lit candle is gently twisted into the auditory canal.   The candle is held vertically in this position until it has burned down.   The client then either turns their head to the other side or turns over and the process is repeated.   A soothing facial massage is performed afterwards, draining the sinuses, reinforcing lymph action and blood flow and enhances the actions of the ear candles.   Pressure points on the face and neck are stimulated in order to release blockages in the flow of vital energy.   Tension can build in our facial muscles from our everyday lives but this treatment also provides de-stressing and anti-ageing benefits.   It also helps to stimulate the lymphatic system, detox and relax, bringing harmony and balance.   This treatment is both therapeutic and relaxing and the client may find they can hear and breathe more easily.

Our ears provide us with two vital but very different senses:  hearing and balance.   Sound detected by the ears provides essential information about our external surroundings and allows us to communicate in highly sophisticated ways, such as through speech and music.   In addition our ears contribute to our sense of balance, the largely unconscious understanding of the body’s orientation in space that allows us to maintain an upright posture and move without falling over.   Ear problems and infections can upset this delicate balance.
