It is generally believed that the word massage derives from the Arabic ‘mass’ or ‘Mas’h’ meaning to press softly. As an art it must be about as old as man himself because to hold or rub an injured part is an instinctive reaction to pain or discomfort.

Massage can be defined as the systematic and manual manipulation of the body’s soft tissue for therapeutic purposes promoting health and well-being.
Most massage therapists utilise the manipulation of the body’s soft tissue (i.e. the skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and facia) using the hands in a gentle, flowing massage technique that uses varying degrees of pressure and stretching movements. It is most commonly used for relaxation and improving well-being.

Whole body massage will benefit mind and body and spirit – hence it is often termed holistic massage.   While receiving stroking, kneading, rubbing and pressing movements the body releases accumulated muscle fatigue and the tired and sore muscles relax helping to disperse blockages.   The strokes also aid lymphatic drainage, allowing the body to detoxify and dispose gently of its waste.   The massage will improve the tone of the skin, enhancing, not only its appearance, but all its functions, it will make you more alert, and help you perform better in your daily life and cope better in stressful situations, by giving you the opportunity to release accumulated physical and emotional tension.

A typical full-body massage session lasts for about one hour.

The therapists offering holistic massage at Being Sound Holistic Health are Joshua Dawson and Jane Scammel.
