Sound has been used to induce altered states of consciousness and out-of-body experiences for thousands of years. One of the ways to harness its power is to work with the energy systems in our bodies.
Chakra healing is based on the belief that, in order for total well-being to take place, we must act as an integrated wholeChakra is a word from Sanskrit that means ‘wheel’. In the body, chakras are the energy centres through which life energies flow, and keeping the chakra system in balance results in health and harmony.
From the ancient Hindu beliefs, there are seven major energy wheels, each spinning in a clockwise direction, and there are also minor chakras in various parts of the body, including the hands and feet. In modern times, we now know that the location of the chakras actually match major nerve or endocrine centres in the body. In this system each of the seven main chakras is said to relate to the energies of each of the seven astrological planets that were known at that time, and also correlate with a particular colour frequency, specific tone of the musical scale, and related gemstones.
The lower chakras, located below the diaphragm are related to the physical or survival realm, while those located above the diaphragm are associated with spiritual, creative or expressive activities.
You may find that different sources differ slightly in interpreting relationships of the chakras – find out from David about some of the most common chakras.
